For Returning Destiny 2 Players

Depending on when you last played Destiny 2, there could be a lot of new experiences in store for you. Let’s start with the latest. The Into the Light update which dropped in April introduced a new hoard mode in the form of Onslaught, a raid-boss gauntlet called The Pantheon, returning exotic missions and even a slew of ” “sunsetted” weapons including The Recluse, The Mountaintop, Luna’s Howl and more.

The main seasonal activity that accompanied this update was Onslaught. Players have the option to choose between a normal version or legendary version that grants increased loot from successful wave completions. Onslaught is an activity that players can easily farm to acquire several of the returning weapons as mentioned above.

These weapons include are all part of the BRAVE Arsenal which can be obtained through Onslaught runs and are as follows:

  • The Recluse (Sub Machine Gun)
  • Hung Jury SR4 (Scout Rifle)
  • Succession (Sniper Rifle)
  • Edge Transit (Heavy Grenade Launcher)
  • Elsie’s Rifle (Pulse Rifle)
  • Falling Guillotine (Sword)
  • Midnight Coup (Hand Cannon)
  • The Mountaintop (Special Grenade Launcher)
  • Hammerhead (Machine Gun)
  • Blast Furnace (Pulse Rifle)
  • Luna’s Howl (Hand Cannon)

As well as the BRAVE Arsenal weapons, players can also receive a new armor set that is quite reminiscent of the original class-based armor sets in Destiny 2.

In addition to Onslaught, returning players can expect the regular rotations of Iron Banner and Trials of Osiris for those in enjoy PvP content, as well as The Pantheon, which allows you to face off against a series of familiar raid bosses.

For New Destiny 2 Players

One of the biggest critiques about Destiny 2 has always been how difficult it can be for new players to get acquainted with the game. However, Bungie has employed several mechanics to make the transition from new player to experienced veteran a bit more seamless.

New Light Campaign Skip

With the arrival of the Into the Light update in April, Bungie introduced a way for players to effectively skip the introductory tutorials and jump straight into the action. This essentially allows players to cut through all the fluff by completing a small mini-campaign that replaces the original Destiny 2 intro sequence.

Once you have completed this mini-campaign, you will prompted to meet up with the Guardian Shaw Han in the Cosmodrome where you will go through a series of short tutorials giving you the basics of Destiny 2 gameplay.

According to Bungie, the removal of the original New Light campaign was intentional as “it [didn’t] fit those players already experienced with first-person shooters”.

New players will still be required to complete the missions “A Guardian Rises” and “Schism”, but once completed, players will be able to head off to the Tower and skip the rest of the usual New Light content. However, keep in mind, if you do wish to experience the entire original New Light Campaign, this skip will be irreversible. Even though you don’t miss out on much if you do decide to skip, it’s worth mentioning.

New Light Kits

In order to further assist players who may be new to the game, Bungie has introduced New Light Kits. Once players have completed the mini-campaign, they can head to the Tower to claim these kits. These kits instantly unlock a curated set of gear and subclass abilities that will be based on your chosen class (Warlock, Hunter or Titan).

The contents of each New Light Kit are as follows:

  • 2 Legendary Weapons
  • 1 Exotic Weapon
  • 4 Rare Armor pieces and a Legendary Class Item
  • Subclass abilities (Aspects and Fragments)

In total, there are nine New Light Kits available, one for each Light-based subclass.

The Future of Destiny 2

Perhaps the most exciting reason that may persuade many players to return to Destiny 2, is the arrival of The Final Shape. This expansion will conclude the Light and Darkness saga in Destiny 2 by allowing players to finally face off with the game’s main antagonist, The Witness.

This expansion will introduce new subclasses, a new playable location, new weapons and armor, a brand new campaign, raid and much more.

For new players and returning players alike, this may very well be the best time to jump back in on the action.

So Should You Return To Destiny 2?

Whether you intend to grind out Destiny 2 to unlock the most coveted exotic item in the game, or whether you just want to hop into a few Crucible matches with friends, there has never been a better time to return.

Also, with a new expansion on the horizon, you’ll have plenty to do in-game.
